China has had the good fortune to have two great rivers: the Yangtze and the Yellow River (or Huang He). The Yellow River is also known as the cradle of Chinese civilization or the Mother River. Usually a source of rich fertile soil and irrigation water, the Yellow River has transformed itself more than 1,500 times in recorded history into a raging torrent that has swept away entire villages. As a result, the river has several less-positive nicknames as well, such as Chinas Sorrow and the Scourge of the Han People. Over the centuries, the Chinese people have used it not only for agriculture but also as a transportation route and even as a weapon. The Yellow River springs up in the Bayan Har Mountain Range of west-central Chinas Qinghai Province and makes its way through nine provinces before it pours its silt out into the Yellow Sea off the coast of Shandong Province. It is the worlds sixth-longest river, with a length of about 3,395 miles. The river runs across central Chinas loess plains, picking up an immense load of silt, which colors the water and gives the river its name. Over the following centuries, the Yellow River silted up and changed its course several times, breaking its banks and drowning surrounding farms and villages. Major re-routings took place in 1034 when the river split into three parts. The river jumped south again in 1344 during the waning days of the Yuan Dynasty. In 1642, another attempt to use the river against an enemy backfired badly. Kaifeng city had been under siege by Li Zichengs peasant rebel army for six months. The 1931 Yellow River flood killed between 3.7 million and 4 million people, making it the deadliest flood in all of human history. In the aftermath, with war raging and the crops destroyed, survivors reportedly sold their children into prostitution and even resorted to cannibalism to survive. Memories of this catastrophe would later inspire Mao Zedongs government to invest in massive flood-control projects, including the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River. Another flood in 1943 washed away the crops in Henan Province, leaving 3 million people to starve to death. When the Chinese Communist Party took power in 1949, it began building new dikes and levees to hold back the Yellow and Yangtze Rivers. Since that time, floods along the Yellow River have still posed a threat, but they no longer kill millions of villagers or bring down governments. When it comes to violence and murder, no excuse can be made. Acts of heartlessness can never be justified. Genocide, or mass murder, has no other purpose but to destroy a nation. Netherlands, in this case, has suffered its ordeal because of the rising tensions in Europe during the Second World War. German troops took over the Netherlands on May 10, 1940 and the people suffered for five long years. Germany took interest in invading the Netherlands because 75% of the Netherlands’ population during that time was Jews. In fact, the Nazis deported hundreds of thousands of Jews, where only 5000 people were able to reach their homes. The people left in the Netherlands had to hide, and there were 30,000 who tried to survive (Laub, 2008). The Netherlands suffered the most number of deaths during the Holocaust, and this country surely knows what genocide means for a country, be it a nation of power or a nation of helplessness. Aside from that, the Netherlands was an interest for the Germans and genocide was something they did not have second thoughts of, because the Netherlands is easy to invade considering its cultural and geographic features (Laub, 2008). To make the picture clearer, anyone who tries to escape the Netherlands will surely fail because the countries surrounding this nation are all controlled by Germany. If not, the Netherlands is surrounded by bodies of water in its Northern side. Anyone who tries to escape safely into the waters will find danger along the way, because the waters were controlled by the Germans, too. That being said, genocide was at its worst, and everyone was there to kill or get killed. Because of the unlikely behaviour of humans that time, the Dutch people learned to regain their independence. They focused on their own nation, nationality and of course, freedom. Fighting hand in hand was not too bloody, because the Netherlands thought that the Germans will outlast the situation in the sense that they may get tired of causing chaos (Julius, 2000). The Netherlands did not use blood to counterattack the power of Germany, but they had campaigns and policies to live by, which can be shown with how the butch wore orange carnation or how they designed their postage stamps with orange colours, or how they wore orange to symbolize Dutch ruling family. Some of them rushed into hiding because they did not want to sign an oath that calls for loyalty to the Germans. The Netherlands succeeded without the use of weapons. Publishing and speaking were their means of survival and resistance, which can clearly be seen with how Anne Frank spread peace, honesty and awareness on genocide, and the Holocaust in general, through her diary (Julius, 2000). However, because of too much fear of being killed from the genocide taking place in the Netherlands, the Dutch slowly forgot about the Dutch Jewry in which small oppressive situations took place. While the Dutch Jewry enjoyed the equal citizenship, they started feeling out of place in a country they considered home because the some of the real Dutch put the blame on the Jews. After all, the Germans went after the Jews for killing (Julius, 2000) Genocide took away lives, but it also took away the more important things that keep nations alive and the world peaceful, like equal rights and plain peaceful coexistence. It may not even be the Germans, but it is especially not the Jews. We can not simply erase a race to give rise to a new and expectedly better one. Meditation Journal Entries

First â€Å"in-class† Meditation have meditated before, but never in class. It was quite an experience! When I meditate, I tend to think a lot. Trying not to think about anything and focusing on my breathing is very hard for me. But know it will take some practice. My mind runs a mile a minute, but repeating â€Å"In and out† to solely concentrate on my breathing definitely helps. I can tell that was still a little distracted.Any goose that I heard brought me back to thinking, wondering what it was, where it was coming from. Once realized I was thinking again, I brought my focus back to my breathing, remembering â€Å"in and out†. I find it fascinating that you have to realize you a thinking sometimes it happens and you don't even know what you're thinking until you take a step back. The mind works in mysterious ways. I am intrigued to learn more about myself and mindfulness through mediation. /1/15 2. Youth: Nighttime Meditation Over the weekend I tried my best to take 5 minutes to myself to re-center and be present. Tonight I was having trouble winding down, so after my tea, I searched for â€Å"Nighttime Meditation† on youth. I meditated for about six minutes until I started to drift into sleep. I enjoyed the meditation because for those few moments of the day, was able to quiet my mind, relax, and become sleepy.I feel that guided meditation works best for me; listening to he soft spoken words of the man from the video really helps me to smash all the irrelevant thoughts going through my head and really focus on what was going on in that present moment. I also enjoyed the part of the meditation where the man was guiding me to feel my body parts, from my feet up to the tip of my head. At this point, feeling relaxed, aware, and present began to doze off. Of course, my head told me â€Å"Hey! You're dozing off! † there I go thinking again, and I shut off the video and immediately fell asleep.

Esthers mind under stress is highlighted throughout the novel by Plath through her various experiences in New York and her narration of them. In her evening out with Doreen, Plath brings forward Esthers difficulty with socialising to the reader. Esther uses a fake identity, calling herself Elly Higginbottom and finds herself feeling safer here we see her insecurities about socialising being highlighted. The fact that she feels safer when under a fake identity gives the reader the impression of schizophrenia in Esthers personality as well as the idea that Esther feels she cannot experience anything exciting with her own identity. Esthers insecurities are further explored as the night goes on and the girls go back to Lennys place. The repetition of I felt in this part of the novel reflects the extent that Esther is distressed and this is highlighted with her melting into the shadows as if she were a part of the setting, with no identity or personality. Plath also describes Esther to be Shrinking to a small back dot this imagery mirrors Esthers mental situation in the novel at this point in time where she is losing her sense of self, her mental health slowly deteriorating. Also Esther describes herself to be a hole in ground where everyone is above her and she is in a position where no body notices her, she is buried. The constant reference to negative, demoralising feelings that Esther expresses in this point of the novel reveal that Esther feels out of place anywhere new to her, everything seems to alienate her and these push the reader to further question her mental health and consider the extent to which he r mind is under stress. At the Ladies day lunch Esthers obsession with eating develops the readers perceptions of her mental health. It is noticeable that Esther secretly analyses the positions of caviar at the dining table. This shows a competitive Esther when it comes to food as well as picking out, again, her constant state of paranoia. Reasons for this seem to be brought to the reader as we are told of her childhood with her grandfather. Her introductions to titbits and the reference to the fact that she was constantly reminded about the price of food in her childhood reveals that it is this poverty, in which she was unable to enjoy not only the expensive food, but food in her own home, that now drives her obsession with the luxurious foods she is presented with at the Ladies day lunch. Esther described her sickness, after being food poisoned, in a graphical way. The description of the toilet as a torture-chamber gives the idea of terrible suffering in an enclosed space, The impressions of claustrophobia are given here, also highlighted as the walls closed in and squeezed Esther into pieces as she was sick in the bathroom. Plath also brings Esthers mind under stress through her experiences with men. We notice that Esther takes an instant liking to Constantine, she refers to the happiness she felt whilst she was with her father. This is significant as throughout the novel it is made obvious that Esther was only truly happy and stable (mentally) whilst her father was still alive, this brings a sense of nostalgia and happiness in the novel which was not previously seen. Esthers reference to the fig tree and options in life show the reader the awareness Esther has of her options. This provokes the reader to think more heavily of Esthers mind under stress and her own awareness of it as well as what Esther has become from her childhood. Marcos treatment of Esther gives the opportunity for the reader to analyse her reaction to another form of male attention. Marcos first impressions as a woman hater made by Esther reveal his unpredictable character early to the reader, she describes him as a snake suggesting his sly personality, looking normal to others but ready to attack at any minute. When questioned about the diamond he has given her, Esther, surprisinglygives a calm answer; wanting to hunt for it afterwards. She even describes her evening bag as a night bird, here she gives calm and beautiful imagery after her attempted rape, This certainly gives he reader an odd impression of Esthers mental state. When Esther is to leave the next day, she throws her clothes out of her window, as if she is purging herself of New York and its memories, good or bad. She describes her clothes to be loved ones ashes to settle in the Dark heart of New York. The use of the word truce to describe her clothes suggest a defeated Esther, and she has decided to give up her constant battle with New York and leave. Also, the use of the ashes symbolise Esthers old being in New York, the one that she is leaving behind, that is now dead further highlighted by the use of dark in the description of New York, as if it may engulf you in its darkness, with connotations of death as well as evil. The personification used in this part of the novel emphasises the extent that New York and its experiences have affected Esther; people can physically and mentally harm a person, just as New York has done to her. Esthers Experiences in New York evidently show Esthers regression into an unhealthy mental state. Plath presents to us her naked inner feelings and reactions to difficult and uncomfortable situations which are intriguing to the reader, showing the extent to which her mind is under stress. We notice, in particular, her constant state of paranoia throughout these experiences and as a result the fact that she is an unreliable narrator is stressed.
